Founded in May 2011 as a Centre of research attached to the Faculty of Science of the University of Mauritius and designated Centre of Excellence in Oct 2011 by the African Network for Drugs and Diagnostics Innovation (ANDI), the Centre for Biomedical and Biomaterials Research (CBBR) set up its labs and offices in Dec 2011 on the premises of the Mauritius Sugar Industry Research Institute. In Dec 2012, CBBR was proclaimed COMESA Regional Centre of Excellence by the COMESA Council of S & T Ministers.

CBBR is a first multi-disciplinary research Centre of its kind in Mauritius, and pools together researchers from Biosciences, Biotechnology, Bioengineering, Chemistry and Pharmaceutical expertise. CBBR aims at assisting Mauritius in its endeavour to develop knowledge-based industries and innovation. CBBR’s objectives are to build a critical mass of expertise, resources and technology, foster multi-institutional partnerships, assist in technology transfer and develop clinical care facilities and act as an interface between the University and the private sector at national level.

Our Vision

To position CBBR as a Center of Reference for Biomedical and Health Care Research & Innovation

Our Mission

To conduct high-level multidisciplinary training and research and to disseminate knowledge

CBBR's research is divided into two units:-

(I) Biopharmaceuticals led by Prof Theeshan Bahorun (National Research and Innovation chair-Applied Biochemistry) and Dr Vidushi Neergheen-Bhujun (Senior Lecturer)

(II) Biomaterials, Drug Delivery & Nanaotechnology unit funded under NRC Biomaterials and Drug Delivery Programme and led by Dr Archana Bhaw-Luximon (Associate Prof) in consultation with Prof Dhanjay Jhurry

Our research thrusts include:-

  • advanced polymer materials, nano-biomaterials and nano-drug delivery
  • development of value-added products from indigenous land and marine resources
  • biopharmaceuticals based on medicinal/endemic plants, and their biological activity and molecular mechanisms of action for the prevention of diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and cancer
